What's with the shipping costs for an online business?

Well here in 2012 we all love to shop online. Ebay is no longer called Evil-bay, and is our BFF. Buying and selling new and old items, fashion, jewellery, motor bike covers and getting rid of that cabinet your Grandmother gave to you when she sadly passed.

Buying online is wonderful and your goodies (if not too large) will be delivered straight to your door. No more dragging your kids around the shopping centre and losing your 4 year old in Big W. Oh, have only I done that!

All online sellers are asking the same question. What is the cheapest and easiest way of getting their products to you?

Ebay suggest to offer free shipping. That's ok if there is enough of a buffer in your profit by the time you take out their fees, PayPal fees, the cost of bubble wrap and packaging and then you have your shipping labels. Do you include your time it has taken to wrap up the organise the postage of the items? So Ebay is suggesting we offer all of that for free!

Recently we (Madam Charli) has been using Australia Post Click and Send satchels. These have been working well and the satchels can be mailed off at your regular red boxes. Saying that, the satchels have recently attracted a price hike and now are up to $6.20 per 500gram satchel.

Are you ok paying that amount on top of the product you have purchased?

So sitting in our bottom draw is all the vouchers and satchels we had to purchase from other courier companies. Two of those vouchers and three of those vouchers gets your item sent however why is it you always run out of one book of vouchers so you have to buy another one! One benefit with Australia Post, they doesn't make you buy a bunch of satchels all at once. However they do charge you for the satchels when purchasing them on Ebay; very clever indeed!

We Found some competition for the Clear Bling@Work Mouse

Where did we find this cheap copy of our lovely clear Bling@Work clear mouse? BIG W in Southland, Cheltenham 3192.

So we thought we would compare the two products, and see what the difference is.

  • Packaging - Big W manufacter their own computer accessories brand called Zipp. Firstly we had a look at the packaging and compared the presentation of the two items. The Big W mouse comes in that hard sealed packaging where you have to take out a pair of scissors and be careful not to cut the product or your hand. Once broken the plastic packaging is sharp so we had to be careful not to do some damage. The Bling@Work mouse easily comes out of the plastic packaging and is ready to go.
  • What you get - With both products you receive a clear bling mouse. With the Big W brand you also receive an instruction manual, which fairly much tells you to plug your USB corded mouse into the computer. I would have thought this concept was obvious!
  • The Mouse Itself - The Big W mouse cost is $19.95, where the Bling@Work Mouse retails anywhere from $35.00 to $50.00. So if you are after a cheaper clear bling mouse I can't see anything wrong with it. Not sure if it is my imagination, however the Bling@Work bling appears to sparkle a little more than the Big W product.

The great thing about the Bling@Work range is you can own the whole stationery range to match your mouse, including the stapler, hole punch, business card holder, USB flash drive, calculator, ear phones and more.
